MONTANA – A rollover accident on Highway 89 near Vaughn led to several hours of traffic delays on Tuesday morning.

A truck pulling a fifth wheel lost control after a strong gust of wind caused the trailer to sway. The driver was unable re-gain control of the vehicle, and it rolled on its side.

The accident also caused the truck to leak propane, prompting Sun River and Fort Shaw firefighters to respond to the scene.

The driver, Ron Thompson of Choteau, was not injured in the accident. He was wearing his seatbelt.

“I was reaching for the trailer brake, because I knew I couldn’t hit the truck brake or it would make the trailer whip around and pretty soon it was just…over,” said Thompson.

Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Danny Sons explained that Thompson got lucky because he was in fact wearing his seatbelt.

“Summer time travel, just be aware of all the travel trailers and everyone else that is on the road, and make sure you wear your seat belt,” he said. “This guy had his seat belt on so he wasn’t injured.”

The accident caused both lanes on Highway 89 to be shut down for over two hours.
